1970年代，海南。海军文工团设考场招收歌舞演员，闻讯赶来的农场女青年黄思华（陈冲 饰），兴奋地为现场考官们演唱了一首饱含深情的歌曲《我爱你中国》。唱毕，考场内外掌声雷动，都认为这是一个唱歌的好苗子。但接下来政审工作遇到了麻烦，由于思华的父亲黄德琛（史进 饰）是南洋华侨，历史背景不尚清楚，对黄思华的录取搁浅了。原来，黄德琛一九五0年从南洋回国后，一直在华南农场辛勤劳动，因为海外关系等原因，文革期间深受迫害，一双儿女也受到牵连，黄德琛深感对不起无辜的女儿。他们一家人在农场饱尝了人们的白眼，思华遥望大海，苦思冥想，始终弄不明白命运对自己一家人为什么如此不公......
